STS-1 carried a level of risk NASA had not accepted since the earliest days of human spaceflight. Every previous American crewed spacecraft, Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo, had first flown uncrewed before astronauts ever rode aboard. Commander John Young, already a veteran of four previous spaceflights including a Moon landing on Apollo 16, and rookie pilot Robert Crippen lifted off from Kennedy Space Center aboard a spacecraft unlike anything that had flown before, a winged orbiter launched vertically on solid rocket boosters and an external fuel tank, designed to glide back to a runway landing rather than splash down under parachutes.

The flight tested nearly every system on the new vehicle across 36 orbits of Earth over just over two days. On April 14, Young guided Columbia through a fiery reentry and glided the orbiter to a smooth, unpowered landing on a dry lakebed runway at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the first time a crewed spacecraft had ever landed like an airplane.
