Biography

The person behind the mission

Walter 'Wally' Schirra was a U.S. Navy fighter pilot and one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. He piloted Sigma 7 on October 3, 1962, completing six orbits in a flight focused on engineering performance and fuel conservation rather than scientific experiments. Schirra commanded Gemini 6A in 1965, achieving the first space rendezvous with Gemini 7, and commanded Apollo 7 in 1968, the first crewed flight of the Apollo Program following the Apollo 1 fire. He remains the only astronaut to have flown missions in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs.
