The person behind the mission
Jeffrey S. Ashby was a United States Navy pilot and NASA astronaut who flew as pilot of STS-93 in 1999, the mission commanded by Eileen Collins, NASA's first female Space Shuttle commander, which deployed the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Ashby went on to command two additional Shuttle missions, STS-100 and STS-112, both dedicated to assembling the International Space Station.
