The person behind the mission
Loren J. Shriver was a United States Air Force pilot and NASA astronaut who flew three Space Shuttle missions. In 1990 he commanded STS-31, the mission that carried the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit and released it using the Shuttle's robotic arm, opening a new era of space-based astronomy that continues today.
